Naturopathy

Naturopathy is a system of treatments based on the principle that your body is able to fight infection and disease itself, given the right support. Naturopathy incorporates a range of treatments and natural therapies including herbal medicine and homeopathy.

While conventional medicine focuses on treating the symptoms of a disease or illness, naturopathy views the patient as an individual and that disease may be caused by a combination of physical, mental-emotional, social, and environmental factors.

How does it work?

Naturopathy works to restore or maintain the body’s balance so that the immune system can defend the body against infection and disease.

For example, bitter substances found in certain herbs stimulate the production and release of digestive juices, thereby improving digestive function. Rather than suppressing the symptoms of an illness with medication, a naturopath is more likely to recommend lifestyle changes or natural treatments and therapies.

What conditions can it treat?

Naturopathy can treat symptoms and causes of acute or chronic disease and a wide range of ailments and conditions, including:

  • Allergic and autoimmune diseases
  • Arthritis
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Ear infections
  • Digestive problems such as irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel diseases, and food intolerances
  • Colds
  • Insomnia
  • Skin conditions such as acne, eczema psoriasis
  • Reduced immunity
  • Respiratory problems including asthma
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Hormonal issues
  • Migraine
  • Female reproductive problems such as endometriosis, menopausal symptoms, premenstrual syndrome, and polycystic ovarian syndrome and infertility
  • Weight loss

Is it safe?

When prescribed properly, nutrients, herbal medicine, and homoeopathic remedies are generally safe to take. However, it is important that you advise your naturopath if you

  • Presently take medications and supplements

  • Suffer from allergies or other conditions
